Consolidation

Even though I had a clear day yesterday, I just didn’t get a great deal done. I guess that is the way it goes sometimes. I was trying to discuss the idea of managers personality profiles affecting learning but it wouldn’t flow. The trick I have found is to reread what I have written several days later – it then becomes easier to criticise more objectively.

I put everything I have written so far into one document just as an exercise… I deleted the multiples of indexes (one per chapter) and set it together just to get a feel for the overall cohesiveness. Once consolidated it felt… weighty. Distinctly weighty and a bit unwieldy, but I had a pleasant surprise in that I have written more than I had thought.

Of the two analyses, social constructionism and cognitive paradigms of learning, I am going to leave the cognitive analysis until after Christmas, but will try to get the interviews completed before then if I can. This may be stretching it a bit, but it would be worth doing if possible because then I can do the transcription over the Christmas period. Christmas is a funny time for me because I work through it, so whereas most people could expect to get quite a bit done at that time, for me writing inevitably takes a back-seat.

I am rereading ‘How to get a PhD’ by Phillips and Pugh – I really should keep this book to hand because it is so relevant, but I am making a concerted effort now. If you haven’t read it, I would really recommend it as it gives plenty of advice on the nature of being a student, as well supervisors’ expectations.
