A brilliant day in terms of getting words down on the page! I had cancelled a meeting that was due to take up the whole day in order to get things done and it has paid off.
I have all but finished the Intro now, with just a few references to fill in. It is, as far as I can tell, what my sup is looking for – I have checked through his original list of comments and understand where he was coming from. If anyone ever tells you postgrad standards are falling, don’t believe them! In any other line of work, my sup would be considered overly pedantic, but in postgrad supervision he is probably exactly what is called for.
I still feel a bit out on a limb regarding the rewrite though. Reading through some of the criticisms, I can see that he hasn’t understood some of the arguments I have been making. This means that I haven’t made my arguments clear enough, so I need to make sure that my train of thought is written down in a more logical order. So, today I have been rewriting and re-ordering whole swathes of everything I have to date… partly in order to achieve the revised layout, but also to ensure a coherency of thought.
I have managed to write about 3000 words of the methodology chapter today. To be fair, a large portion of this came from older drafts that had been discarded when the layout changed. So, I have created a more logical structure (I hope) and have filled in the gaps.
All in all, the restructuring has proven to be a good thing and I feel more confident in this simplified approach. Now all I need to do is look at some literature regarding Critical Incident Technique and adapt it to fit my research. Easy eh?
